Criminal Records Bureau
The Criminal Records Bureau provides wider access to criminal
record information through its disclosure service.
It enables organisations in the public, private and voluntary
sectors to make safer recruitment decisions by identifying
candidates who may be unsuitable for certain work, especially that
involving children or vulnerable adults.
Organisations wishing to use the service can ask successful job
applicants to apply for one of two types of disclosure known as
standard and enhanced disclosure. The type required will depend
upon the nature of the position. Both require a fee but are
available free of charge to volunteers.
Another level, known as basic, will soon be available and will
result in a certificate detailing any unspent convictions. They
will be applied for and issued exclusively to individuals and will
not involve the recruiting organisation.
Standard disclosure
This is aimed at anyone whose job involves working with children
or vulnerable adults.
Standard disclosures show current and spent convictions,
cautions, reprimands and warnings held on the Police National
Computer.
Enhanced Disclosure
This is the highest level of check available and is aimed at
anyone who regularly cares for, trains, supervises or is in sole
charge of children or vulnerable adults.
Enhanced disclosures show the same information as standard
disclosures plus any relevant information held by local police.
