Performance
Essex is one of the safest counties in England
and Wales and Essex Police is performing well, preventing and
detecting crime and bringing those who commit crime to justice.
Essex Police ranks in the top five forces in the country for low
levels of anti-social behaviour as perceived by the public.
It is not just Essex Police
Authority, who says so. Essex Police is also inspected by outside
agencies and they publish their findings.

Crime Levels
You can find out the levels of burglary,
robbery, vehicle crime, violence and anti-social behaviour in your
county or your specific neighbourhood down to street level.
You can compare those levels with other streets,
neighbourhoods or counties. You can also see how Essex Police
performs in bringing offenders to justice and compare this
performance with other Police Forces.

Her Majesty’s Inspector of
Constabularies (HMIC)
HMIC has published official crime and
anti-social behaviour figures together with the independent and
professional assessments of forces carried out by their Inspectors.
They have developed a police report card that demonstrates how
forces are performing across a range of areas. The Police Report
Card shows:
- how safe you are
- how much is spent on your police
- whether they perform well and if they are likely to
improve.
You can compare this information with the
situation in other areas so you can decide if you're getting a good
service and see how it fits into the national picture and in so
doing compare Essex Police’s performance against that of any other
police force in England and Wales.
These Report Cards are now held on The National Archive
website.

The Audit Commission
The Audit Commission is an independent
watchdog, driving economy, efficiency and effectiveness in local
public services to deliver better outcomes for everyone. It carries
out a rolling programme of inspections of both police forces and
police authorities focusing on how resources are used and will
highlight good practice.
They also inspect other organisations involved
in community safety such as Local Strategic Partnerships to see how
they deliver against national priorities. You can read about case
studies and national studies.

Essex Police Authority
(EPA)

on behalf of the people of Essex, through its Performance
Committee. This ensures the chief constable provides an effective
police service, by overseeing the delivery of objectives and
targets for various plans such as: Local Policing Plan, the
authority’s own business plan and race, equality and diversity.
The Committee also deals with consultation and engagement
arrangements (except in relation to the budget), HR issues
and the Police Reform and Modernisation agenda.
