Special Constabulary
We are not currently recruiting for the Special
Constabulary or accepting transfers from Special Constables serving
with other forces.
Members of the Special Constabulary are just that – special.
They’re people who give up their free time to work with the
police to improve the communities in which they live and
work.
Special Constables have full police powers, uniforms and equipment
but sacrifice their free time on a voluntary basis, organising
their busy personal lives, day jobs and other commitments around
police duties.
They’re a key part of the police family, working alongside
police officers and PCSOs to help make Essex a safer place to live,
work and socialise.
Our Specials are men and women of all ages and from all walks of
life.
But whether they’re mums
or dads looking for a new challenge, retired business people, taxi
drivers, plumbers or hairdressers, they all have one thing in
common – the drive and determination to help make a difference.
You can too if you're:
- Aged at least 17 years and 9 months
- Physically fit and in good health
- Willing to give a minimum of 16 hours every month
- Able to think on your feet and work as part of a team
Working as a Special Constable is a rewarding yet challenging
role. You’ll experience real life situations you might not normally
encounter, have to cope with the unexpected, think quickly and
learn to work as a team, but you’ll be offered full on-going
training to help develop these skills.
