On the evening of 31 October 1926 Thomas Wake was walking along the Billericay to Brentwood road, talking to a man, when they saw a motor bike coming towards them showing a very dim light. The officer warned the man to get on the verge, but before he could do so himself the motor bike knocked him over. Thomas Wake was off duty for a month suffering from bad headaches and epileptic fits, but returned to work. On 5 February 1927 he suffered similar symptoms and died three days later.
