George Thomas Brenchley
Southend-on-Sea County Borough Constabulary.

Served from 1st April 1914. Died on 24th August 1918.

George was born in Murston, Kent, the son of Thomas Brenchley, of Sittingbourne, Kent, and husband of Kate Mabel May Brenchley of 99 Moseley Street, Southend-on-Sea.

He enlisted into the army in Sittingbourne, and, after his service ended, joined the Colchester Borough Constabulary, with whom he served for 347 days as Pc 433. He then joined the Southend Borough Constabulary on its inception on 1 April 1914 as Pc 32.

In common with many constables, Brenchley was an army reservist, which meant a compulsory recall to the Colours on the outbreak of war in 1914. Lance Sergeant 14565 Brenchley of the 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards was wounded three times in his four years’ service, which ended with his death in action on Saturday 24 August 1918 at the age of 26.

Described by his commanding officer as a ‘most gallant sergeant’, George Brenchley left a widow, Kate Mabel May, and two young daughters at their home at 99 Moseley Street in Southchurch.
He is buried in grave V.D.3. at Mory Abbey Military Cemetery, Mory, in Pas de Calais, France.

Police Constable 32.
