William George Burnett - Essex County Constabulary.
Served from 1st July 1911. Killed about 29th October 1914.

William George Burnett was the son of George Burnett, of 105, St. Pancras, Chichester, Sussex. He was born in Chichester where he enlisted into the army. He served as a Constable with Essex County Constabulary at Brentwood and then Wickford from 1st July 1911 to the outbreak of the war on 4th August 1914.

He rejoined the 1st Battalion, Coldstream Guards as Lance Corporal 7591. He was initially posted missing in action on 29 October 1914 and was later presumed to have been killed on that date. Ironically, his words to Superintendent Cowell at Brentwood ‘I am well’ had been printed in the Essex Weekly News only six days earlier. His body was subsequently never found, so 25-year-old Burnett, who was unmarried, is commemorated on panel 11 of the Ypres (Menin Gate) memorial, at Ieper in Belgium.

Police Constable 493. Serial Number 2694.
