First World War memorialsSydney Francis Crabb - Essex County Constabulary. Police Constable Sydney Francis Crabb was born in Brentwood and joined the Essex Constabulary on 24 August 1914. He was one of five unmarried policemen who answered a call from the Chief Constable for army volunteers; consequently, he left the force on 31 May 1915 to enlist in Chelmsford. He served as Lance Corporal 17615 in the 8th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, and was killed in action on Friday 7 July 1916 when his battalion was involved in an attack at Ovillers on the Somme. He is commemorated on pier and face 8 C 9 A and 16 A of the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing, in Somme, France. Police Constable 189. Serial Number 2848.
