First World War memorialsCharles Alfred Freeborn - Essex County Constabulary. Police Constable Charles Alfred Freeborn was the son of Mark and Emma Freeborn of Church Street, Kelvedon. He was born in Kelvedon, Essex, and baptised at the local church, St Mary the Virgin, on 2nd October 1892. His service in the Essex Constabulary, which began on 9th November 1912 and ended on 16 May 1915, was undertaken at Braintree and he lived, unmarried, in nearby Bocking. He went to Chelmsford to enlist, and during his time as Private 17383 in the 3rd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers he saw action in France, where he was wounded, in Salonika, and in France once more where he was killed in action, aged 26 and single, on Friday 4th October 1918. He was buried in grave II. D. 2. at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gouy in Ainse, France. Police Constable 508. Serial Number 2759.
