Alfred Hyde was born in the Bedfordshire village of Littleworth, near Wilstead to Joshua George Hyde and his wife Sarah (nee Cooper), who were both natives of Wilstead; they had married there on 24 November 1876.

He served with Essex County Constabulary from 17th June 1913 to 17th November 1915.

Alfred’s service with the Essex County Constabulary included postings in Chelmsford, Westcliff-on-Sea and Brentwood, where he got engaged to local girl Ada Yeomans. His police career ended on 17 November 1915 as he left to serve, as Private 1st Class 209333, with the Royal Flying Corps (later, on 1 April 1918, to become the Royal Air Force).
He spent 18 months with 16 Balloon Base in German East Africa, where he contracted malaria. His eventual death though in the Royal Naval Hospital, Plymouth, on 12 July 1918 at the age of 24 was caused by pneumonia after scarlet fever.

He was buried four days later at All Saints Church in Wilstead. Among the mourners was his brother Frank, who at the time was a Detective Sergeant in the Essex County Constabulary at Romford.
