First World War memorialsThomas George Joyce Thomas Joyce was born in North Ockendon, Essex, the son of Walter Arthur Joyce and his wife Eliza. By 1901 the family was living in Great Warley in Essex, where Thomass father was employed as a stockman by Mr Evelyn Heseltine. Thomas spent part of his life in Keswick in Cumberland before returning to Essex in April 1914 upon the formation of the Southend Borough Constabulary. He served for a year before enlisting at Southend into the Coldstream Guards, joining the 1st Battalion and serving as Lance Corporal 15945. Leaving behind a young wife at their home at Elm Cottages, Howards Chase, in Prittlewell, Joyce crossed to the Western Front, where having left the trenches on 11 May 1916 he was killed by a shell as he made his way back to his billet. A younger brother, John William, had been killed at Gallipoli on 29 August 1915, and another brother, Ernest, was wounded in March 1918 while serving with the Gloucestershire Regiment. Thomas, who was 22, is buried in grave I.A.34 at Poperinge New Military Cemetery in West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. His name will be added to the war memorial at Southend Police Station shortly.
