Charles Norwood - Essex County Constabulary.
Served from 1st February 1911. Died 4th June 1917.

Born in Borough, south London, Charles was the son of Frederic and Jane Norwood, who later moved from London to Hertfordshire.
Their son joined the Essex County Constabulary on 1st February 1911 and later, married to Amy, set up home at 24 Cromwell Road in Prittlewell. He left the police on 31st May 1915 to enlist in Shoeburyness with the Royal Garrison Artillery.

He was serving in Ploegsteert Wood in Flanders with the 245th Siege Battery as Sergeant 122436 when on Monday 4th June 1917 the Germans bombarded the position with gas shells from the effects of which Charles Norwood, aged 27, died.

His commanding officer described him as one of the best sergeants he had ever had under his command, and Norwood is buried in grave I. O. 3 at Trois Arbres Cemetery.
