George Calver Shipgood
Southend-on-Sea County Borough Constabulary.

Served from 10th March 1915. Died on 3rd July 1916.

Born in Stratford, Essex, the son of Thomas Shipgood, a labourer.
He joined the Southend Borough Constabulary on 10th March 1915, and some six months later, on 25th September, 24-year-old Shipgood married local girl Lydia Naish, also 24, at All Saints church in Southend. His bride was the daughter of the late Daniel Naish, a bootmaker.

George enlisted into the army in Southend that December, and was originally with the Rifle Brigade before he joined the 9th Battalion, Essex Regiment as Private 24160. He was killed in action on the Somme at Ovillers on Monday 3rd July 1916, leaving his widow and a daughter (only a few days old at the time of her father’s death) at the family home in Dalmatia Road, Southchurch.

He has no known grave and is commemorated on pier and face 10 D of the Thiepval Memorial in Somme, France.
