First World War memorialsJames Edmund Stone - Essex County Constabulary. Born in Poplar, the son of Charles and Eliza Stone, who were later resident in Norman Road, Mistley, Essex. He joined the Essex County Constabulary on 8th December 1914 and when off duty indulged his fondness for sport, being vice captain of Manningtree Football Club. He left the police on 31st May 1915, enlisted into the army at Grays and saw service in Gallipoli and in France as Gunner IO/869 of ‘B’ Battery, 15th Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery. He was wounded in France on 6th July 1916 and subsequently died from these wounds on Wednesday 2nd August, aged 22 and unmarried. He was buried in grave B. 36. 11. at St. Sever Cemetery in Rouen, France. Police Constable 139. Serial Number 2871.
