First World War memorialsWalter George Sutch - Essex County Constabulary. In common with Frederick Boyce, Alfred Hyde and Ernest Wedlock, Walter Sutch had a family member, in Walters case his father Henry George, to follow into the police service. Walter was born in Hatfield Broad Oak, the son of Clara Sutch, whose husband was a police constable at North Weald around the turn of the century. The family later moved to 194 Sydenham Road in southeast London, and then on to 126 Kilmorie Road in Forest Hill. He served with Essex County Constabulary from 15th August 1914 and it was in London that Walter enlisted into the army, once his service with the Essex County Constabulary ended on 6 May 1915. Walter, who was unmarried, died on Tuesday 7th March 1916 from illness while on active service as Lance Corporal M2/106189 in the 401st Mechanical Transport Company, Army Service Corps. He was 20. He was buried in grave Div. 19. T. 1. at Ste. Marie Cemetery in Le Havre, France. Police Constable 110. Serial Number 2838.
