First World War memorialsAlfred Welham - Essex County Constabulary. Born in Lavenham, Suffolk in 1890, Alfred was the youngest son of Harry Welham and Eliza (nee Elliston). He enlisted at Sudbury around 1906 into the Suffolk Regiment and served with them in Malta and Egypt. He joined the Essex County Constabulary on 14th July 1914 and had no time to complete his month-long training at headquarters in Chelmsford, as war broke out on 4th August. He rejoined the 2nd Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment the following day, and was one of some 720 men from the battalion who died in the rearguard battle fought at Le Cateau on 26th August 1914. He was the first Essex police officer to die in the War Pc Welham, who was unmarried, has no known grave and is commemorated on the La Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial in Seine-et-Marne, France.
