First World War memorialsAlfred Wilson He enlisted at Southend in December 1915 into the Rifle Brigade, serving as Lance Sergeant S/14598 with the 16th Battalion in many engagements including battles on the Somme. He also undertook the hazardous task of working on tunnelling operations with the Royal Engineers. Married with two children, Pc Wilson was killed in action on 20 September 1917, aged 27. He has no known grave and is commemorated on panels 145 to 147 of the

Born
in Billingshurst, Sussex, Alfred Wilson was a steward on the White Star
liner Oceanic and an asylum attendant before he joined the Southend Borough
Constabulary on 10th March 1915.
