Norman Kaye - Essex County Constabulary.
Served from 26th September 1938. Killed 18th July 1943.

Police Constable Norman Kaye was born on 27th September 1915 in Wavertree, Liverpool. He served in the army from 7th September 1934 for exactly four years and joined Essex County Constabulary on 26th September 1938. After training at Headquarters, Norman was posted to Chelmsford from 3rd December 1938.

On 1st December 1939 he was recalled to the army and in the same month married at Chelmsford Cathedral. Norman went overseas in August 1942 but was killed in action on Sunday, 18th July 1943 whilst serving as Lieutenant 217431 with the 10th Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment in Catania.

The Essex Chronicle later reported that he had lost his life after returning to help comrades who had been cut off in woods - previously he had led other comrades out safely. The 27 year-old's widow lived at 62 Baddow Road in Chelmsford. He was buried in grave II. D. 37 at the Catania War Cemetery in Sicily.
