About the Essex Police Museum

Essex Police Museum entrance

The Essex Police Museum was established in 1991 as a registered charity. (No.1042055)

The Museum's collection consists of objects, paper documents and photographs relating to the history of the force from 1840 to the present day.

Why does Essex Police have a Museum?

We are very fortunate to have a Police Museum which is open to the public.

Our aim is to preserve the history of Essex Police and provide our visitors with a friendly and educational service, with information on how Essex Police has developed to become what it is today.

Many people have contact with the police when they are either a victim or the culprit of crime. The Museum gives the public an opportunity to discover more about the police and what they do, in a relaxed atmosphere.

In 2005 Essex Police Museum opened to the public on a regular basis, all thanks to a £43,000 grant awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The project included a new education programme (for children and adults) as well as a complete refurbishment of the displays, which have helped to increase our visitor numbers and make us more easily accessible.

The Future

To continue our success and the educational work that we do for our local communities, we strongly rely on donations from our visitors and supporters.
