Update
Having reviewed crime within the Mersea, Abberton and Finringhoe
areas for the last month it has been a relatively quiet period with
less than 25 reported crimes having occured. Looking at these there
is no obvious trend or pattern, however there does appear to be
opportunity to reduce this further with simple crime prevention
steps being taken.
During the last month we received two reports of pedal cycles
having been stolen both of which had been left inseucre, One even
had the lock stolen with it!! Please remember to lock your bikes as
this will deter the opportunist thief. Consider postcoding your
property as again this can lead to identification should it be
recovered in the future.
There were also a small number of burglaries across the area
whereby access appears to have been made via the rear of the
address. Please ensure that any gates or access points to the rear
of your property are locked and check that doors and windows are
both closed and locked before leaving or going to bed as this will
not only deter criminals but may also invalidate insurance claims.
Other preventaive measures include security lighting and
CCTV.
MARK/RECORD YOUR PROPERTY
Please take a note of serial numbers of any outboard engines,
unregistered motorbikes, plant equipment etc that you own. It is
also adviseable to mark your property with your post code. On
numerous occassions Police search the homes of criminals finding
what we believe is stolen property. We end up giving it back to the
criminal as we can't identify the true owners.
TELEPHONE SCAMS
These occur all the time. Please be on your guard if you are
contacted by these people. They can be very convincing. Do not
disclose any personal / bank details to them.
SHOPPING SECURITY
Please be careful where you keep your valuables at your place of
work or out shopping. Never ever disclose your PIN number to anyone
not even bank staff.
For crime prevention advice have a look at our Be Safe
section.
ANTI SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR
Colchester Officers regularly arrest people for public
order/criminal damage offences and seize alcohol. Anti-social
behaviour will not be tolerated by the police and it will be dealt
with firmly.
If you do see anti-social behaviour taking place that you believe
the police should attend, please call us on our neighbourhood
mobile 07966 197265 or The new 101 non emergency number.
The next Mersea Island Neighbourhood Action Panel Meeting is on
Wednesday June 6th at 19:30 to be held at the West Mersea Town
Council Offices.
You can take action in a number of ways to help make your
neighbourhood a safer place to live, work and visit.
