Below you can read about the issues you have made a policing priority in your neighbourhood. We aim to act on the issues that matter the most to you.

Local Priority

Issue

Anti-social behaviour, noise and littering, at the bus stop outside St. Nicholas Church, at the top of the High Street, and in and around the grounds and cemetry area.

Raised on 26/09/2011

Action

26/08/11:- I have been given pictures of youths actiing anti socially, and when identified home visits will be done. 01/10/11:- The youth concerned has been spoken with his parent present. 20/01/12 :- A local resident advised that youths were still playing in this area. Some were stopped and details recorded recently. Those stopped there again will get visits at home. 13/02/2012 :- Youths misbehaving in the church grounds and climbing on the bus stop outside still continues to cause concerns. Parents if you're aware your child plays in that area please speak to them regards respect for the Church and graves etc. PC Thomas to speak to local council regards the bus stop and it attracting the anti social behaviour. The question of what to do regards the bus stop was raised at the Wakering Parish meeting, and councillors were asked to consider changes to it to make it less appealing to "hang around". Additional staff were in attendance on two sets of Friday and Saturday lates to monitor and patrol the area between the public toilets in the High Str and the Church grounds. There were no reported incidents, or even many youths about on those occasions. Unfortunately it appears there was some ASB around the public toilets on the Sunday by the usual youths.

BEWARE OF UNSCRUPULOUS BURGLAR ALARM COMPANIES OPERATING IN THIS AREA !

There are some extremely good burglar alarm installers out there who provide a professional service at a reasonable price. However, there are also some unscrupulous companies who pray on people’s fear of crime to sell their products at extortionate prices. These companies usually use telephone ‘cold calling’ as a way of making contact. They will offer free surveys and even free alarms but, those taking up their offer, always end up with a very large and unwarranted bill. In order to further their credibility reports suggest that they will say that they are crime reduction officers from Essex Police or allege that they are in some way working with the Police or the Home Office.

Of course, when this is put to them they deny all knowledge of using these tactics. The problem is, when these incidents are investigated, it is their word against the customer’s. Any prosecution against them fails because there is no evidence.

We am aware that many people now have ansafones with a speech record facility on them so that you can record a conversation even if you answer your phone.

What we would like you to do in an attempt to thwart these companies is………..if you receive and answer this type of call and you have the record facility I have mentioned, press your record button and keep the caller speaking about their product for as long as you can. Then, of course, refuse any offer they make. Legitimate companies won’t mind this because they have nothing to hide but you may be able to record false claims from unscrupulous companies that could be used in evidence against them. Then let us know so that we can listen to the conversation.

These unscrupulous companies are tricking elderly and vulnerable Essex residents out of thousands of pounds every year. We must do all we can to stop them and we can do that with your help.

You can take action in a number of ways to help make your neighbourhood a safer place to live, work and visit.
