Below you can read about the issues that you have made a priority in your neighbourhood. We aim to act on the issues that matter the most to you.

Local Priority

Issue

St Lukes Ward 'Neighbourhood Meeting' priority - To address general Antisocial behaviour across the ward.

Raised on 12/12/2011

Action

It was requested that information be passed to Police from residents in order that sufficient evidence could be gathered in order to address the current situation. Police agreed to conduct further patrols within the tower blocks. 13/02/12 - Since the last meeting a number of drug warrants have been executed in the two tower blocks of flats thereby ceasing the issue of drug dealing causing ASB in the flats at this time. It was decided however that they is still general ASB occuring across the ward which needs to be addressed, so it was decided to slightly alter this priorty but to leave it open for work to be conducted. 01/05/12 - At the lat NM it was agreed that ASB in and around the Tower blocks was still a problema dn required further action, hence the need for this to remain the one priority for the area.

Update

A number of operation’s were run throughout 2011, aimed at reducing Theft from, or of motor vehicles, which were mainly occurring overnight, as a result of the combination of efforts, arrests were made, patrols completed and with your support by ensuring your vehicle is locked and secured, with any valuable items removed, there appeared to have been a reduction.

Unfortunately, there has been a rise in these offences, we have launched Policing Operation's and are working hard to reduce the problem, however, please ensure your vehicle is free of displayed goods, is secure and alarmed, especially overnight.

If you do see anyone acting suspiciously, please do not hesitate to call the Police, and for more information, please speak with a member of the team.

New Year, New Start, why not add ‘Not being a victim of crime in 2012’ to your resolutions, there are many ways in which we can prevent being a victim, but some of us take little steps to make it happen, just picture the below:

You come home and find you are a victim of burglary, the family are total devastated, often resulting in a desire to move home, you call the Police, we arrive, we offer you all the support we can and carry out a first class investigation, however as is in a lot of cases, we are unable to recover any goods, or find the person responsible, the question here is ‘Why’?

Now picture the below:

Being a security minded community member, you speak to your local Neighbourhood Policing Team, who subsequently give you a wealth of crime reduction advice, as a result you actually do complete a ‘property schedule’, listing all of your applicable goods, UV marking or photographing were necessary, supporting such with Selecta DNA, you alarm your property, give consideration to CCTV, sensor lighting, the Handy Van Scheme, message in a bottle, and bring your street closer by involvement in NHW ‘Neighbourhood Watch’.

So, you may be asking yourself, how does doing all of this make a difference to me?

Well…

You may have sent a message out to the criminal who was about to commit a burglary at your home, not to bother! Resulting in no crime!

Why…

You now know exactly what was in your home to start with, you have make, model, serial numbers, location of UV/Selecta DNA markings, photographs, in the event of a crime, the Police will work closely with all forms of companies which may be used to move goods, ebay, cash converting stores, second hand shops and alike, without knowing these details, it is near impossible to quickly link it to a crime.

You may now have footage of the offenders, or can offer support in the event of a neighbour falling foul to the undesirables.

You may, by being part of NHW, be able to work closely with the Policing Team to spread the word of the above, remain vigilant and guide us to the persons acting suspiciously, or walking away with the neighbours gold and flat screen.

You will have left your own mark on your property, and will be sending out a message via small display notices that you have done so, many Officers carry UV light readers, Custody blocks have them, cash converting stores use them! Imagine how many times naughty people are stopped with stolen items, in this case we could now link it back to your crime and have him in custody before he can leave your street, but without marking, logging, how can we prove it was not his/hers in the first place!

Your local Southchurch policing team is out and about working within the community to offer crime reduction advice, perform home security surveys and in specific identified roads, to drop off crime reduction packs.

Recently Operation Cornerstone has been set up to try to combat the recent Anti Social Behaviour that has been reported in the area of Cluny Square. This Operation involves Police officers, Pcsos and the Street Engagement Team who are all attending the area to try to discourage the youths from causing ASB problems and point them towards activities they could get involved in.

We can all benefit from more public support and you can help us to help you by increasing the security of your property, using a number of crime reduction methods which could prove invaluable in the later recovery of your property, or the detention of the person responsible. If you would like any information about methods available, please contact us.

Thorpe ward's team, together with members of BERA - Thorpe, being The Burges Estate Residents Association, will be looking to drive forward Selecta DNA, and see this introduced in to the ward, if you have any questions in respect of this, or wish to secure your property with it, please contact the team to express your interest, and we will be happy to discuss this with you.

The team is supporting Southend Neighbourhood Watch with a number of schemes such as nominated neighbour, designed to combat bogus caller crime. This is an excellent scheme that requires little more than your support towards an elderly or vulnerable neighbour, and a newly created Driver School Watch (DSW) currently being piloted in Thorpe Ward.

Unfortunately we cannot be in every street all of the time and rely on residents to keep an eye on their neighbour’s property and tell us about any suspicious behaviour. A reduction in insurance premiums is offered for people in a NHW area. We still need more residents to join the NHW. For more information please contact the NHW team at Southend on 01702 464199.

You can take action in a number of ways to help make your neighbourhood a safer place to live, work and visit.
