Below you can read about the issues we have made a policing priority in your neighbourhood. We aim to act on the issues that matter the most to you.

Local Priority

Issue

Lack of police presence on patrol and at events. This is creating a confidence issue within the community which can and does increase the perception of crime and anti-social behaviour. The team will identify hot spot areas and working with EYPDAS (Essex Young People's Drug and Alcohol Service) attend these locations to work with the youth to reduce offences.

Raised on 16/11/2011

Action

Local officers from the neighbourhood policing team will endeavour to conduct high visibility patrols in their areas and will try to achieve a 75% figure for time spent doing these patrols on each shift. This will include local neighbourhood constables, neighbourhood sergeant, police community support officers and special constables working alongside the local team. Events such as fetes, fairs, carnivals and festivals often attract a minority number of people determined to cause problems and commit crime. The local policing team will (where possible) provide a highly visible presence at these events. Notice from event organisers has to be received in good time to allow the correct level of staff for the event. By attending these events we can only improve our community relations, our knowledge of local issues and reduce crime and reports of nuisance. 01/02/2012 Anti social behaviour in Alresford in the month of January was extremely low. High visiable patrols will continue around the village as this is having a positive effect. 02/03/2012 February continued to have a very low level of antisocial behaviour with only one report. Patrols will continue to provide to confidence in police presence. 14/04/2012 Now the nights are drawing out high visibility patrols will continue throughout all of Alresford. ASB continues to be very low . 02/05/2012 Dedicated patrols around the village at all times continue particularly around schools, churches and village halls as recently there has been an increase in rural areas of burglaries.

Local Priority

Issue

Insecure/vulnerable property being an "Easy target" for criminals.

Raised on 16/11/2011

Action

Research of crime locally suggests that a high percentage of crimes committed involve insecure houses, cars, boats, sheds and garages. Property such as cycles and personal possessions are often left insecure, in open view and are not security marked or identifying numbers are not known. The local policing team will be pro-active in identifying such issues as described above and make direct approaches to owners to get it rectified. A media campaign will be considered and crime prevention measures will be considered and promoted within local communities. This will be at the forefront of all local officers’ minds when out on patrol. 25/11/2011. This priority was renewed at the most recent neighbourhood action panel meeting in November. The neighbourhood policing team will update this priority as and when they have notable updates to give. 29/12/2011 Over the festive period this is an area which is often overlooked by the house holder, leaving presents in full view in both vehicles and houses. An easy target for the criminal. This continues to be a priority. 01/02/2012 All residents need to remain aware of any unusual activity or persons hanging about showing particular interest in properties. Ensure you leave your property securely locked avoiding temptation to an opportunist burglar. Always double lock your doors. 02/03/2012 During February a burglarly took place whereby entry was gained via an insecure conservatory door. It is vital that your property is secure when you are away from the property and before you retire to bed.Double lock doors and ensure downstairs windows are shut or open with a locking system. 14/04/2012 There has recently been an increase in crime within the Creek area of Alresford. The area that has been affected is the boating/sailing community. Boats are easy targets as often they are unattended and property is left on the boats.

Local Priority

Issue

Speeding and the setting up of community speed watches.

Raised on 29/03/2012

Action

Speeding has become one of the main causes of complaint in this area and other rural areas. Regular checks will be carried out and offending motorists will be prosecuted as speed kills. Roads Policing units from Operational Policing Command have historically supported our team and continue to do so by conducting regular speed checks and surveys in the area. Support is also given by CEO (camera enforcement office). They place static cameras and mobile camera vans in areas known as KSI sites (sites of fatal or serious injury road accidents). Working with highways and casualty reduction, speed loops will be fitted in areas of high complaints to monitor traffic and vehicle speeds. Working with the community we want to encourage the set up of Community Speed Watch where local people want to get involved in what is a very prominent issue. 29/03/2012. This priority was renewed at the most recent neighbourhood action panel meeting in March. The neighbourhood policing team will update this priority as and when they have notable updates to give. 17/03/12 - If anyone wishes to be trained as a community speedwatch volunteer then Pc HEARD will be happy to train you. 14/04/12 - Throughout the beginning of April Speed Enforcement has been taking place in various locations in Alresford. These checks will be increased shortly working with the local Community Speed Watch. 30/04/12 - Speed detection equipment has been deployed in your area recently. 02/05/2012 We are continuing to deploy laser detection equipment in Alresford and we are actively encouraging local residents to become involved in their local community speed watch.

There are some extremely good burglar alarm installers out there who provide a professional service at a reasonable price. However, there are also some unscrupulous companies who pray on people’s fear of crime to sell their products at extortionate prices. These companies usually use telephone ‘cold calling’ as a way of making contact. They will offer free surveys and even free alarms but, those taking up their offer, always end up with a very large and unwarranted bill. In order to further their credibility reports suggest that they will say that they are crime reduction officers from Essex Police or allege that they are in some way working with the Police or the Home Office.

Of course, when this is put to them they deny all knowledge of using these tactics. The problem is, when these incidents are investigated, it is their word against the customer’s. Any prosecution against them fails because there is no evidence.

I am aware that many people now have ansafones with a speech record facility on them so that you can record a conversation even if you answer your phone.

What I would like you to do in an attempt to thwart these companies is………..if you receive and answer this type of call and you have the record facility I have mentioned, press your record button and keep the caller speaking about their product for as long as you can. Then, of course, refuse any offer they make. Legitimate companies won’t mind this because they have nothing to hide but you may be able to record false claims from unscrupulous companies that could be used in evidence against them. Then let me know so that we can listen to the conversation.

These unscrupulous companies are tricking elderly and vulnerable Essex residents out of thousands of pounds every year. We must do all we can to stop them and we can do that with your help.
