Below you can read about the issues that you have made a priority in your neighbourhood. We aim to act on the issues that matter the most to you.

Local Priority

Issue

Incidents of burglary and theft of lead from premises on Grays south ward have increased dramatically this month, we have had 14 reports of metal thefts from premises and 18 reports of burglary.

Raised on 01/12/2011

Action

We are looking at both high visabilty and covert patrols as a first response, and creating an operation to tackle these issues. Theft of metal has spiked across the board as the price of scrap metal has risen, and we are currently working with the scrap yards in the area to gain intelligence of people selling scrap on a regular basis. The burglarys reported are both dwelling and other, which include places of business, sheds, garages etc. 10/10/2011 We have only had 1 reported incident of Burglary this month and this was a garage burglary. We are remaining to keep our patrols and high visability policing at the highest level as practicable, and will incorporate this with our Halloween and fireworks night patrols. 28/11/2011 This matter continues to be a priority although incidents seem to be reducing to a "normal" level. There have been a number of operations and "days of action" to assist with the targetting of known offenders and burglary suspects. We will continue to target individuals known to be involved in this kind of offence. 18/01/2012 We have not had further increases in burglary offences although they are still a concern.Lead is still being stolen and Churches are still a target as they have significant amounts of lead on the buildings. We continue to gain intelligence and make arrests and this will remain a priority. 19/03/2012 The increase in offences seems to have subsided, with regard to burglaries and metal theft. It appears the price of some metals has gone down and this has affected which metals are being stolen.

Neighbourhood Priorities - You Say, We Listen!

Raised on 20/01/2012

Action

As we have started a new year we have decided to set fresh neighbourhood priorities that the police can tackle. Residents are asked to think of the problems that matter to them the most and are invited to feed them back to us at the next neighbourhood meeting. Together we will choose 3 problems to tackle and will feed back our results to the residents at the meeting and through the website. Please see the events page to find out the details of our next meeting. We hope to see you soon!

Update

The railway station is a concern and has anti-social activity from both people who use the railway system and those who target it with criminal behaviour. We are working closely with British Transport Police to improve the environment for those who wish to use the rail system.

We are also working with the town centre team, which works actively to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour. We have looked at long term solutions to the problem of heavy drinkers around Clarence Road and other areas around the town. After some months of providing evidence of his behaviour to the courts an individual has now been given a full civil ASBO. This was breached and he has been sentenced to 24 weeks in prison. This individual has since breached his order a number of times and has received further prison sentences.

More recently in partnership with the local authority a DPPO or Designated Public Places Order has been put in place for the area of the town centre and some surrounding roads. This allows officers to control disorder and anti-social behaviour that is caused by alcohol consumption. It gives the power to stop persons drinking alcohol inside the area restricted and seize alcohol found when stopped. There is also a power to arrest persons who fail to comply with officers’ requests.
I receive regular reports from local people regarding people drinking in this area and they tend to think that because they have seen someone drinking the DPPO is not working.I can reassure you that this is not the case and myself, other officers and my Pcso's are regularly seizing alcohol in this area. The order has helped significantly with alcohol related problems. However we can't always be around and need your help to pin point any problem areas.

The area around Brooke House, Brooke Road has historically been a problem with both residents and non-residents hanging around outside in the street. This led to an increase in anti-social behaviour. Brooke House staff are working closely with local officers and recent developments have been encouraging. Both staff and local officers will be proactive and the situation monitored closely.PCSO's have regular visits to monitor, speak to staff and keep problem individuals on their toes.

The theft of metals continues to be a major issue for the whole of the country and Grays is no exception. Please report any suspicious activity immediately, especially at night. This is when thieves steal Lead from houses and garages and we need to catch them in the act to provide evidence to convict them. Do not wait till the morning, they will have caused significant damage and will be much more difficult to apprehend.

Burglary is always an issue this time of year,

Avoid being a burglary victim. Let's make life difficult for the burglar. There are a number of steps you can take to help prevent your home being burgled and avoid the distress of having your treasured possessions stolen:

Fit a timer switch which will turn your lights on when you are not at home.
Fit dusk to dawn security lighting.
Have an alarm fitted and service it regularly.
Look at the boundaries of your property and keep hedges short and trimmed.
Neighbours - support each other.
Immediately report any suspicious incidents to the police.
Mark valuable items with your postcode.
Do not leave any valuables on show.

Remember burglaries can occur when people leave their premises insecure. Don't let yourself become a victim. Always remember to lock your door with the key when you are going out and before you go to bed at night and please keep the key close by at night in case of an emergency.

You can help stop vehicle crime in our area by ensuring your vehicle is always locked and if it has an alarm it is in full working order.

Please ensure that all valuables are out of sight when leaving your vehicle, sat nav systems are easy to steal from a car if they are left on show, as are all small items such as mobile phones and MP3 players.

If you need crime prevention or home security advice please do not hesitate to contact me on the neighbourhood policing mobile number 077793 19907 so we can arrange a suitable date and time for us to attend your address.

Please take a look at our Be Safe section of our website which will give you handy tips and advice about how to keep you and your property safe.
