Update
Shed and Outbuildings
With security on many houses upgraded, burglars are opting for easy
pickings at the end of the garden. A shed, garage or out building
is often far easier to break into and less likely to be alarmed,
yet many carry small but expensive DIY tools which are easier to
make off with than a computer or television. Although tools are
cheaper to buy than some household items, they carry a healthy
second hand value and are easy to sell on quickly.
Advice about shed security:
- Think about where your shed is positioned
- Install mains or battery powered alarms and invest in some lights
to illuminate that part of the garden
- Make sure the shed is firmly anchored to the ground – it has been
known for sheds to be lifted to let thieves inside.
- Firmly secure the shed door and windows.
- Fit a wire cage inside the shed where more expensive items can be
locked away. No thief wants to hang about longer than they have to
so delay the time it will take them to get their hands on your
tools
- Secure hinges with coach bolts not screws.
- Secure a lockable box to the floor and/or wall of the shed to
store power tools in.
- Anchor a thick cable to the floor, attach valuables to it and
secure with a good quality padlock.
Burglary Dwelling
A house that is left insecure is an attractive target for thieves.
Don't make it easy for opportunisitc thieves. Burglars can strike
at any time but most burglaries can be prevented by securing your
home. Most burglars are opportunists and in 3 out of 10 burglaries,
access is gained through an open door or window. Two thirds of
burglars get in through a door and a third through a window so
security is vital. Here are some simple tips for home
security:
- Strengthen wooden doors by fitting a steel strip and plates to
the door frame and around the lock. These are commonly called
London and Essex bars
- Make sure hinges are sturdy and secured with strong, long screws.
For added security fit a pair of hinge bolts
- Never hang a spare key inside the letterbox – it’s an obvious
place that a thief will check
- Keep your doors locked even when you are at home. If you have a
UPVC door, be sure to lock it properly by lifting up the handle and
using a key
Scrap metal
With an increase in building work in the area, building sites are
being hit with burglaries and thefts and we are appealing to the
public to report any suspicious people or vehicles immediately
using 999. Scrap metal is particularly popular at present. Please
record times along with descriptions and vehicle details, including
registration numbers.
You can take action in a number of ways to help make your
neighbourhood a safer place to live, work and visit.
