Cycling in Leigh is Bliss

Deputy Chief Constable Andy Bliss took to his bike to embark on a cycle patrol in Leigh earlier this week.

Mr Bliss visited Leigh police station in Elm Road on Monday, November 22, 2010 and joined PCSO Carol Fox on patrol.

Carol has covered more miles on a bicycle than any other PCSO in the South Eastern division, which covers the Southend, Rochford and Castle Point areas. Between May and October this year, she cycled an incredible 916 miles and is a regular sight on the streets of Leigh.

As Mr Bliss pumped up his tyres and fastened his helmet, he said: “In my view, you can’t beat police patrols on bikes as a means to meet the public and catch criminals.

"I’d promised Carol back in the summer that I’d go on patrol with her and I’m very much looking forward to it, as luckily we’ve arranged it for a nice sunny day!”

Carol added: “We can cover so much more ground when on our bikes, and it’s an ideal way of patrolling more remote areas such as Two Tree Island.

"It also puts us in a good position to respond to incidents across Leigh and Westcliff, where there are no available local PCSOs within walking distance of the location.”
