Day of action on Mersea Island sees results
A man was arrested on suspicion of burglary as part of a
multi-agency day of action on Mersea Island on Wednesday, July
14.

He was arrested on Seaview Avenue, West Mersea, on suspicion of a
burglary which occurred at Mersea Island School on July 12.
The 30-year-old, from West Mersea, is currently being questioned at
Colchester police station.
Speeding drivers, graffiti and litter were also dealt with as part
of the sixth Day of Action in the Colchester district.
Other highlights from the day include:
- More than 4,600 homes visited by teams of door-knockers who
handed out leaflets about personal safety and home security. The
team also visited 100 businesses to hand out information about
Essex Police’s Business Watch scheme.
- 6.5 tonnes of rubbish collected by Colchester Borough Council’s
mechanical sweepers. Litter-pickers removed a further half tonne.
Eight pieces of graffiti were also scrubbed off walls and
buildings.

Police seized one uninsured vehicle and issued a fine to a driver
who had no tax. One parking ticket was also issued by Civil
Enforcement Officers.
- More than 70 people visited the SOS bus, where Colchester’s
Crime Reduction Officer, Colin Stiff, was on hand to give advice.
Visitors to the mini-SOS bus could also get a advice from an NHS
adviser on smoking and sexual health.
- Three pets were wormed and microchipped by the RSPCA, who also
responded to one complaint about an animal.
- More than 400 pupils at Mersea Island School got a taste of
police life when officers arrived with a vehicle full of riot gear
for them to try on. The DVLA delivered a crushed car to the school
to help educate the pupils about car taxation and licensing and
pupils took part in a competition to guess its make and
model.
- The Essex Probation Service Community Payback Team assisted
with the clean up activity by clearing a previously inaccessible
pathway from Victory Road.
- Essex County Council’s Trading Standards visited five licensed
premises and invited them to join up to the Challenge 25
initiative.
Chief Inspector Andy Fusher, district commander for Colchester,
said: “I’m always impressed with the enthusiasm and energy of all
involved with the Days of Action; the scheme is going from strength
to strength.
“I’m really proud of the way we all work together in Colchester.
It means we are able to tackle issues like anti-social behaviour so
much more successfully and with greater, long-term effects.”

Safety Said: “Previous Days of Action have produced excellent
benefits to local communities. We are delighted to be bringing the
project to Mersea Island. By cracking down on anti-social behaviour
such as litter and graffiti we intend to make a significant impact
on the local community.
“Improving community safety and tackling crime is a priority for
Colchester Borough Council. We are extremely pleased that the
relationship we have with our partner agencies helps us to deliver
these excellent results for residents.”
Essex Police, Colchester Borough Council, Essex County Fire and
Rescue Service and Essex County Council were among the agencies who
joined forces for the event.
