The building in The Crescent was evacuated and a cordon put in place to allow colleagues from the Essex County Fire and Rescue Service to carry out an assessment of the area following a call to police at 12.40pm.

The fire service has been unable to identify any hazardous material.

The East of England Ambulance Service has not been able to identify any particular cause or reason for these people becoming unwell.

In total 29 people were assessed at the scene and then went home, while three were taken to hospital for further assessment.

Cordons are now being lifted.

Discussions will now be held with the Health Protection Agency.

If anyone who was involved in today’s incident and has a genuine concern for their health they should ring NHS Direct on 0845 4647 in the first instance to get advice.
