Public warned to look out for snake

Police in Wickford are warning the public to be on the look out for a six foot long snake that has escaped from an address in Barnfield, Wickford.

The boa constrictor snake escaped from a bathroom window on July 30 and its owner has been unable to find it.

Specialist search officers combed the area around the house where the snake went missing. They searched areas of Rettendon View, Seven Acres and Barnfield, including the play area, cricket pavillion and bowls club in Wickford Memorial park but did not find the snake.

Although not fully grown, is described as 6ft long and about as thick as a baseball bat.

The force's wildlife liaison officer is speaking with specialists and the RSPCA.

Essex Police cannot rule out a risk to the public however our understanding is that this snake will only feed on small animals.

Police have consulted with the chair of the Essex Reptile and Amphibians club who agrees that is it unlikely to be a threat to the public.

Anyone who spots the snake should not approach or interfere with it but ring 999 immediately.
