Officers from the neighbourhood policing team joined
representatives from the charity at the South Ockendon Community
Forum to offer a security marking service to mobility scooter
users.
The scooters were etched with a unique identification code and the
owners were given a ‘passport’ which details all the information
police need in the event of it being stolen.
Nearly every owner who drove past took up the offer of the free
marking, and were also given crime prevention advice by the local
officers and police community support officers (PCSOs).
Newly appointed neighbourhood constable for Belhus, Pc Claire
Learmouth, said: “Scooters are used by vulnerable members of our
community and are an expensive mobility aid.
“By security marking them it will hopefully deter thieves and aid
us in recovering them if they are stolen.
“It is also a good way for us to engage with the local community
and discuss any crime concerns they may have.”
