Cracking down on metal theft in Basildon
Operation Bodmin is the codename for the ongoing crackdown on
metal theft in Basildon and surrounding areas.
Sgt Paul Costin and his team regularly set up road blocks in the
town to stop check vehicles carrying scrap metal to local scrap
dealers.
The officers also visit scrap yards to stop thieves making an easy
profit from stolen metal.
In the film above we join Sgt Costin and his neighbourhood policing
team as they continue their efforts to stop metal theft in
Laindon.
He said: “Metal theft if a growing national crime issue but by
working with scrap yards to make sure they have their books in
order, we can make sure that thieves do not have anywhere to sell
on their goods.
“Metal theft is not a victimless crime - it not only causes
building owners and councils the hassle and expense of replacing
stolen items, it can also cause significant building damage
too.
“We hope our continued efforts send out a strong message that metal
theft will not be tolerated and you will be caught if you commit
crime in this area.”
