A unique job with unique demands
Being a police officer is unpredictable,
challenging and demanding. It’s a unique job with unique demands
but above all it’s an extremely rewarding one.
Every day officers work on the front line to
reduce crime, support victims and witnesses and make life safer for
the communities of Essex.
Policing isn’t easy. The shifts can be tiring
and the situations you find yourself in challenging or even
frightening, but it’s full of exhilarating new experiences.

There is no
other job that I would want to do. Every day is different and
varied.
Pc Danielle Bailey, Clacton
Whatever your reason for wanting to become a police officer,
you’ll be joining a team of equally committed officers all with the
same goal – to keep their county safe.
No day is ever the same and your duties will
vary from searching people and premises to interviewing suspects
and victims and presenting evidence in court.
Essex Police officers
work a 40-hour week. Your shift pattern may vary depending where
you are based but you will be required to work both day and night
shifts.
All new officers complete a two-year
probationary period. After this you may chose to work your way up
the ranks or specialise in a particular area of policing. From
detective to the dog unit, there is huge potential for career
development.

I enjoy
the satisfaction I get when I attend an incident and those involved
say thank you and the fact that most people in the area know me by
my first name.

Pc Kingsley Edore, Grays
Starting pay for Essex police officers is
£22,680, rising to £25,317 after initial training. There’s also a
£2,000 yearly allowance.
When Essex Police starts recruiting again this page will be
updated with all the information you need.
In the meantime, take a look at the criteria, recruitment process and training information on the site.
