Working in the UK
Section 8 of the Asylum and Immigration Act makes it illegal to
employ a person who does not have permission to work and live in
the UK.
Essex Police checks the status of any police staff employed on or
after January 27, 1997. We therefore ask everyone to provide one of
the following documents from List A or two documents from List
B at interview:
List A
1. A
passport showing that you are a British citizen or a citizen of the
UK and Colonies having the right of abode in the UK.
2. A passport or national identity card showing that you are a
national of the European Economic Area* or Switzerland.
3. A residence permit, registration certificate or document
certifying or indicating permanent residence issued by the Home
Office or the Border and Immigration Agency to you as a national of
a European Economic Area country or Switzerland.
4. A permanent residence card issued by the Home Office or the
Border and Immigration Agency to you as a family member of a
national of a European Economic Area country or Switzerland.
5. A Biometric Immigration Document issued by the Border and
Immigration Agency to you which indicates you are allowed to stay
indefinitely in the UK, or have no time limit on your stay in the
UK.
6. A passport or other travel document endorsed to show that
you are exempt from immigration control, are allowed to stay
indefinitely in the UK, have the right to abode in the UK, or have
no time limit on your stay in the UK.
*The European Economic Area covers the following countries:
- Austria
- Belgium
- Cyprus
- Denmark
- Finland
- France
- Germany
- Greece
- Iceland
- Ireland
- Italy
- Liechtenstein
- Luxembourg
- Malta
- Netherlands
- Norway
- Portugal
- Spain
- Sweden
- UK
List B
If you are unable to provide a
document from List A, please provide two of the following documents
in the correct combination at interview:
An Immigration Status Document issued by the Home Office or the
Border and Immigration Agency to you with an endorsement indicating
you are allowed to stay indefinitely in the UK or have no time
limit on your stay in the UK; OR Together with A document
showing your permanent National Insurance number and Name issued by
a Government Agency or a previous employer
e.g. P45, P60, National Insurance card or a letter from a
Government agency
A full birth certificate issued in the UK which includes the
name(s) of at least one of your parents; OR
A full adoption certificate issued in the UK which includes the
name(s) of at least one of your adoptive parents; OR
A birth certificate issued in the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man
or Ireland; OR
An adoption certificate issued in the Channel Islands, the Isle of
Man or Ireland; OR
A certificate of registration or naturalisation as a British
citizen; OR
A letter issued by the Home Office or the Border and Immigration
Agency to you which indicates that you are allowed to stay
indefinitely in the UK.

potential employees.
