Neighbourhood Specialist Officer - Pc Gary Harrington
Pc Gary Harrington 250

I have served with Essex Police for the past six and a half years and have worked at all the police stations across the Epping Forest district. I have been based at Epping for the past four years and I am Epping town's neighbourhood specialist officer (NSO). I also work alongside police community support officers (PCSOs) Laura Martin and Carley Etherington. I will shortly be joined by another NSO and this will be Pc John Mackman. The sergeant for the area is Sgt Jackie Mileham.

Priorities for Epping Town Local map and area covered

The local community priorities for Epping Town are:

We ask: Your local neighbourhood policing team along with our partners want to know the community issues which matter to you. You can come and tell us at one of the events below, submit a web contact form, call the team's mobile phone number or stop them in the street to tell them what matters to you.

You say: The issues you tell us about are taken to a Neighbourhood Action Panel (NAP). At this meeting, representatives from your community will consider all the concerns raised and decide upon prioritised actions.

We deliver: Working together we will address these priorities and keep you updated on progress. Click on your current community priorities above to view their progress and search those already completed. As part of our policing pledge to you, any issues you call us about which are listed as a neighbourhood priority will be attended within 60 minutes when attendance is required.

Actions and updates for Epping Town

Epping is a low crime area and will continue to be so with the help and support of the community we serve.

I hate to say it but the nights are now drawing in and summer is officially over, most of you would have realised that the nights are drawing in earlier each night and will continue to do so. This will mean that before people arrive home after work it will be already very dark, if your home is left in the dark it is a sure sign that there is nobody inside. This can alert would be burglars to your home and may leave your home at more of a risk to being targeted. I would suggest that people look into installing internal timers on a light, or lights inside the address. This means that at a certain time a light in your home will be turned on. This gives the impression that somebody is inside and the premises has not been left empty.

Of course when leaving your home make sure that all your doors and windows are locked and that all keys are kept away from these areas and out of sight. Most doors now have mortice locks that are activated when locking your door by lifting the handle upwards. Please make sure that you activate these locks if you have the option, these increase the security to your home and make it a lot harder for people to force entry to your home.

It has been well publicised that there was a recent serious incident that occurred outside the 195 Club in Epping, in the month of September. Since this incident the club has been closed. I can report that at a recent licence review held at Epping Forest district council, the clubs licence has been revoked. Due to this the club will remain closed until further notice. This shows that such incidents will not be tolerated in Epping by either the police or the district council.

There have also been recent reports of people receiving calls at home from people claiming to be police officers. These people are stating that they work for an anti-fraud department and believe that the person they are calling may be the victim of fraud via their credit and debit cards. The caller is requesting that these people pass over their card details and PIN numbers so that checks can be made and investigations carried out. I urge people to never give out information to anyone about their bank details. If the caller is a genuine police officer they will be happy to tell you what police station they are from so that you can call that station and check they are who they say they are.

If anyone wishes to contact any member of the policing team about any issue, please feel free to call via 0300 333 4444 or 07779317211. Alternatively you can send me an e-mail via this web page.
