Disclosure and barring service
The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) provides wider access to criminal record information through its disclosure service.
It enables organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors to make safer recruitment decisions by identifying candidates who may be unsuitable for certain work, especially that involving children or vulnerable adults.
Organisations wishing to use the service can ask successful job applicants to apply for one of three types of disclosure known as standard, enhanced and enhanced with list check disclosure.
Discloses spent and unspent conviction, cautions, reprimands and warnings
Discloses all the above in a standard check plus locally held information by Forces relevant to the position applied for.
Enhanced Disclosure with list check
Discloses all the above in an enhanced check plus check on ‘barred list’ (barred from working with adults or children)
The type of check required will depend upon the nature of the position. All checks incur a fee but are available free of charge to volunteers.
