Operation Homeguard is believed to be one of the most successful Police volunteer schemes in the county.
The concept of the Operation Homeguard is for volunteers to join police officers and staff in order to target high volume emotive crime areas in Colchester by offering public reassurance.
Volunteers engage with residents, informing them of crime issues in their area and giving crime prevention information. Volunteers also seek intelligence which can lead to the detection of crime. They are a high visibility deterrent. This is a non-confrontational role and police are always on deployments.
Operation Homeguard gives volunteers the opportunity to work with Essex Police and gain experience of working with the public.
To date, we have interacted with around 10,000 residents in Colchester, spread over 40 separate deployments since its implementation in 2013.
All volunteers are issued with Police Volunteer Identification, notebook and specially commissioned uniformed jackets. Volunteers undergo a full Essex Police vetting procedure and CRB check.
Volunteers have used the experience they have gained on Operation Homeguard to go on and find full-time permanent employment.
We are always looking for professional and reliable volunteers in the Colchester area.
