Since being set up in 2009, the Stansted Airport Plane Watch has grown from strength to strength and now has an enviable 680 registered members. It is run by PC 73305 Hayley Peek and PC 73425 Ghosh based at Stansted Airport Police Station.
It provides a platform for dialogue within this important community who play an integral part of airport life, forming closer links between the Police and members. In addition it allows members to visit a normally restricted area of the airport to spot from once a month as part of Spotter Saturday, and we are hoping to increase these. Our Yahoo chat forum enables members to exchange views and information and post their own photographs.
Members are given a welcome pack, lanyard and identification card which they will be asked to show upon request from any police officer, police community support officer or member of airport security staff while at the airport.
If you would like to apply for Plane Watch, you'll need to complete an application form and send two passport size photographs, photo identification in the form of a photocopy of a passpost or driving licence and confirmation of home address such as a photocopy of a utility bill.
Essex Police will then carry out a number of checks on the details you provide. We reserve the right to refuse applications without explanation.
The identification card strictly prohibits members gaining access to any restricted area within the airport. It does not give members any additional rights over any other member of the public. However it does show your enthusiasm in helping us to protect the airport from criminals and defeat terrorist threats against aviation.
By joining the scheme, we will be able to keep in touch by e-mail or letter to let you know how you can help. We'll let you know what they're looking for and who you can contact to report anything suspicious.
