The borough of Colchester covers an area of 125 square miles in northeast Essex. It borders Suffolk, Tendring, Braintree and Maldon. It has a population of around 192,700 people. At its centre is the city of Colchester, which is surrounded by villages and smaller towns with areas mainly used for agriculture. Larger towns include Stanway, Wivenhoe, Tiptree and West Mersea. The island of Mersea is at the south of our borough, and it forms the borough’s principal coastal area. The borough is home to a large university and it is also home to a garrison for military personnel.
