Hate Crime - Sexual Orientation & Transgender Identity - Motivating Factors
May & June 2021
There are five strands of hate crime, I am writing to find out statistics relating to two of these (Sexual Orientation and Transgender Identity).
The total number of Hate Crimes in May 2021 where Sexual Orientation was recorded as a motivating factor.
The total number of Hate Crimes in June 2021 where Sexual Orientation was recorded as a motivating factor.
The total number of Hate Crimes in May 2021 where a person’s Transgender Identity was recorded as a motivating factor.
The total number of Hate Crimes in June 2021 where a person’s Transgender Identity was recorded as a motivating factor.
There is a significant public interest in discovering if whether there has been a rise in Sexually-Orientated Hate Crimes in June compared to May this year, as June marks Pride Month and there has been a spate of Homophobic attacks reported so far this month.
The Home Office publishes an annual report of recorded Hate Crimes, the last was published in October 2020 releasing statistics for 2019/2020. Although the release of statistics for Sexually-Orientated Hate Crimes may be intended for future publication, there is a pressing need to see the statistics for Pride Month this year, due to the spate of Homophobic attacks reported this month.
Waiting for this report will also be ineffective as it is not specific enough, it provides annual statistics but it does not give a month by month breakdown of reported Hate Crimes.
If you are unable to provide me with data for 2021, please can you provide me with your data for May compared to June 2020?
It is essential that this information is broken down into monthly, not annual statistics.
I understand that the systems used by different Police forces in England may not necessarily generic and that incidents may be recorded under a specific category, please can you, where possible, provide statistics relating to Hate Crimes motivated by Homophobia/Sexual Orientation and due to someone identifying as transgender - in whichever way these may be categorised on your system for the area within your jurisdiction.
