Race Hate Crime Offences by Victim Gender and Outcome
2016 to 2021
This is a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. I would like to request the following information:
Q1. The total number of hate crimes recorded against people of East and South East Asian descent in the following calendar years: 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and any figures available for the period beginning January 1st 2021 and ending June 1st 2021.
Please note that victims of East and South East Asian descent can be recorded in the following categories: Chinese, Chinese - Other, Chinese/Other, Oriental, East Asian, South East Asian or Southeast Asian. They can also be recorded under the IC code IC5.
Q2. For each year, please break down the figures by month, the gender of the victim, and the category of crime recorded (e.g. sexual offence, theft, etc).
Q3. Please disclose the outcomes (charged, no further action, caution etc) of hate crime incident recorded in the answer to Q1 for the following calendar years: 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and the period between January 1st 2021 and June 1st 2021. Please break down the figures by month and gender.

Having completed enquiries within Essex Police in respect of Section 1(1)(a), Essex Police does hold information relating to your request. Under Section 1(1)(b) the below and attached have been provided in relation to your request:

The Hate Incident Type Dimension was selected to have the ‘Hate Incident – Racial’ Option.
The Home Office Classification of ‘NC/10’ was used to bring back all relevant Hate Crime Offences and Records.
Set of dates: 01 January 2016 to 30 June 2021.
A total of 210 Hate Crimes have been recorded against people of East and South East Asian descent, between 01 January 2016 and 30 June 2021. The yearly breakdown of these figures is shown on the attached FOI 15770 Disclosure spreadsheet.

The Force Information Management Board chaired by the Deputy Chief Constable has oversight of the Force wide programme of work to improve the quality of Force data.
