Below you’ll find answers to some of the questions we’re most commonly asked by applicants.

What hours will I be working?
Full-time posts are 37 hours per week but days and times will be individual to each post. Part-time hours are specified by the department or division and in the recruitment advertisement.

When do I get paid?
All police staff are paid on the 23rd of each month direct into a bank or building society.

What are the arrangements if I am sick?
Sick pay is payable according to your length of service.

Is there a period of probation?
Yes. All appointments are subject to a probationary period. This is either six or 12 months depending upon the role.

How many days off do I get each year?
The annual leave year begins on April 1 each year and there’s a minimum entitlement of 22 days (pro rata for part-time posts) rising to 27 days after 5 years' service. Leave entitlement increases according to seniority.

Are there any sports and social clubs to join?
You can join the Essex Police Sports Association for £2 per month. This entitles you to participate in sport for Essex Police as well as the force lottery. You will also receive a membership card which entitles you to a host of discounts at health clubs, restaurants and cinemas.

Can I smoke at work?
Essex Police operates a no smoking policy at work. There are some areas outside for those who wish to smoke.

Can Essex Police help me get a work permit?
Essex Police is unable to apply for work permits on behalf of potential employees.
