Teenager charged with murder of man in Colchester

February 17 - update

We have charged a teenager with murder, attempted murder and possession of a knife following an incident in Colchester.

The 17-year-old from Woolwich, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged last night, Saturday, February 16, and he has been remanded to appear at Colchester Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.

The charges follow the death of Carl Hopkins, 49, who was found dead in Ryegate Road on Monday February 11, and the stabbing of another man, who was found in George Street on Sunday, February 10.

A post mortem examination found that Mr Hopkins died as a result of a stab wound to the left lung.

February 15 - update

We have arrested a teenage boy in connection with the murder of a man in Colchester.

The 17-year-old from Woolwich in London was arrested this afternoon, Friday 15 February, in Woolwich on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

This is in connection with the death of Carl Hopkins, 49, who was found dead in Ryegate Road on Monday February 11, and the stabbing of another man, who was found in George Street on Sunday 10 February.

The boy is currently in custody for questioning.



February 13 - update

Detectives, continuing to investigate the murder of a man in Colchester, have appealed for anyone who may have mobile phone or dash cam footage in relation to the incident to come forward.

Carl Hopkins, 49, from Colchester was found dead in Ryegate Road, Colchester at just after 8.20am on Monday February 11.

A post mortem examination has taken place and we can now confirm Mr Hopkins died as a result of a stab wound to the left lung.

His death is being linked to an incident which happened shortly before 9.55pm on Sunday 10 February in which a 40-year-old man was found in George Street with stab wounds to his back.

The man was taken to hospital where he is receiving treatment.

Detectives are continuing to work around the clock but are urging anyone who may have seen anything or who may have captured footage to come forward.

Senior Investigating officer Det Supt Stephen Jennings of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate said: “We would like to hear from anyone who may have been in the Ryegate Road area on Sunday evening or Monday morning who may have mobile phone or Dash Cam footage that could assist our investigation.

“Equally if anyone was in the George Street area and saw anything suspicious or captured any footage we would also like to hear from them.

“We have a team of dedicated, specialist detectives working around the clock and we are doing all we can to catch those responsible.”

Both incidents are believed to be drug-related and isolated in nature. Patrols are continuing in the town centre to provide extra reassurance.

February 12 - update

We can identify a man who died following an incident in Colchester.

We were called shortly after 8.20am on Monday 11 February with reports a man had been found deceased in Ryegate Road, Colchester.

He has been identified as Carl Hopkins, 49, of Colchester.

We think his death is linked to incident, which happened shortly before 9.55pm on Sunday 10 February.

A 40-year-old man was found in George Street with stab wounds to his back and was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Our enquiries are progressing and we believe both incidents are drugs related and isolated in nature

We have increased patrols in the town centre to provide extra reassurance and continue to ask anyone with concerns or information about either incident to speak to officers.

We were called by the ambulance service shortly after 8.20am today, Monday 11 February, with reports a man had been found deceased in Ryegate Road.

He had suffered stab wound to his back.

Enquiries remain at an early stage and we are appealing to anyone who was in the area this morning and saw what happened, or has any information, to call the North Major Crime team on 101 quoting incident 208 of today’s date.

February 11

We are appealing for witnesses after a man was found with stab wounds in George Street, Colchester.

We were called by the ambulance service shortly before 9.55pm on Sunday 10 February and the 40-year-old man was taken to hospital with wounds to his back.

His injuries were serious but not believed to be life threatening. He remains in hospital receiving treatment.

Our enquiries are ongoing and we are looking into whether there are any links with the death of a man who was found in Ryegate Road shortly after 8.20am today, Monday 11 February.
