Be aware of reported scam
Main article content
We are urging people to be aware of a scam involving people posing as Essex Police officers.
It follows a call to us earlier this month reporting the victim had been contacted by someone claiming they were from Essex Police and telling the victim they were involved in money laundering and drugs offences emanating from Mexico.
The caller told the victim to provide the last four digits of their National Insurance Number and instructed them to transfer all funds onto a Google gift.
Fortunately, they did not do this.
We will never ask for this information over the phone or ask you to transfer money out of your account.
If you receive a call that you feel may not be genuine, ask for the officers details and either hang up the call or use another phone to ring us on 101 to confirm that the officer did call you.
If you believe you, or a friend or relative, have also been contacted in this way please call us to report it.
If you have any information you can submit a report online or use the 'Live Chat' button to speak to an online operator between 7am-11pm.
