Supporting veterans in our custody
Main article content
We understand that their experiences during military service may make them vulnerable and we are committed to helping and supporting them.
In the past 12 months, we have referred 281 military veterans arrested by our officers to Project Nova, which then works to assess their needs and put in place specialist support to help them.
Samantha Bridge, our lead for Project Nova, says: “Essex Police has worked closely with Project Nova for several years now, with great success.
“And last year we introduced a new system to ensure we can help even more veterans who have been arrested.
“More than 100 volunteers from across the force have now offered their services to ensure that all military veterans arrested in Essex are made aware of the support Project Nova can give them if they wish to engage with the charity.
“Many have gone on to obtain the help and support they need, from mental health and housing support to help with employment and general advice.
“And the majority of those who have been helped through Project Nova have not had to step back into a police station, which is fantastic.”
If you are, or a family member is, an Armed Forces veteran and needs any help or guidance, you can contact the Project Nova team on 0800 917 7299 or visit their website.
