Our newest student officers got lots of exercise as they raised money for The Trussell Trust, cycling the distance between Land’s End and John O’Groats, which represents the 2.5million people who rely on food banks across the UK.
PC Sarah Scully, PC Keely Duncan, PC Liberty Keyes, PC Lauren Andrews, PC Evelyn Thatcher, PC Phoebe Maguire, PC Declan Gosling, PC Maciej Wilczynski, PC Daniel Latus, PC Arron O'Connor and PC Lewis Judge each rode a total of 87km in their own time.
They completed most of the 874 miles (1,407km) distance during October and finished it on static bikes in the High Chelmer shopping centre in Chelmsford.
As part of their training, each intake of student officers has to raise money for a charity, which each class in the intake chooses itself.
The 11 officers of X4 Intake chose to support The Trussell Trust, which provides emergency food and support to people in need and supports more than 1,200 food banks across the country. There were lots of kind donations of food during the event on Saturday by some of the local community in Chelmsford.
Sarah and Keely helped to organise the cycle ride, which raised more than £1,900 for the charity.
Along with their bike ride, the officers also arranged a raffle, with several businesses donating their services or goods. Winners were drawn on the day.
“We decided to support The Trussell Trust because 1 in 5 people live below the poverty line in the UK and, making it even closer to home, almost 15% of residents in Essex live in poverty and 51% of households in Essex earn less than the living wage.
“The food banks are here to support those families and individuals in crisis with a rule that no-one in the community should have to face going hungry."
PC Sarah Scully
