Clacton Airshow: ‘A fantastic trouble-free two days’

The crowds flocked back to Clacton Airshow and had a very enjoyable and peaceful time.

“We’ve had a fantastic two days. Everyone came here to enjoy themselves and have a great time and that is exactly what happened.
“I’m pleased for the local community because the sun shone brightly on an event which has been disrupted in recent years.
“But the airshow has made a great comeback, with one of its busiest-ever days today, and it has been trouble-free.”

Tendring District community policing Inspector Martin Richards

Despite an estimated crowd of 160,000 today, Friday 26 August, and an estimated total of 210,000 visitors over the airshow’s two days, we made only one arrest. A 40-year-old Clacton man was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply cocaine and of possession of cocaine.

Three people were stopped and searched. A quantity of cannabis was seized from one man, who was issued with a community resolution as a result.

Over the two days, 19 children were separated from their parents but all were reunited within minutes of a report being made.

Police officers and police community support officers (PCSOs) from the Tendring Community Policing Team, along with North Disruptor Team, Roads Policing officers and our Operational Policing Command were on duty across the two days. Their numbers were supplemented by our Tendring Volunteer Police Cadets Unit and 32 of our volunteer Specials – who alone contributed around 380 hours of patrols around the town, walking a few hundred miles in the process.

Our Marine Unit patrolled the coastline to help ensure people were safe in the water. Officers on our rigid-hulled inflatable boat, or rhib, Sentinel rescued three children caught by the strength of the tide after they went for a swim off the back of the boat they sitting in. They were quickly reunited with their parents.

And a member of the team riding our personal watercraft was alerted by a member of the public at the end of the pier to check out a swimmer. The man was taken back to shore on the back of our PWC.

St John Ambulance reported 141 medical incidents and our officers and PCSOs assisted at some of these.

“A lot of planning with event organisers Tendring District Council, the Royal Air Force, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, East of England Ambulance Service and other partners ensured the airshow was a very safe event.
"Our officers remained vigilant at all times and the fact they only needed to stop and search three people during two days is testament to the fact that people were here simply to enjoy the air displays and the glorious weather."
