Before you set off on your journey, make sure you are prepared for the hot weather.

As the summer temperatures are rising, and day trips to our beauty spots are encouraged, take a minute before you set off – is your car prepared for the journey ahead?

Launching our Summer Road Safety Essex campaign, Adam Pipe, Essex Police’s Head of Roads Policing, said:

“More of our residents will be taking to the roads in this glorious weather to enjoy the seaside, parks and tourist attractions as a welcome break during the schools’ summer holidays.
“We take our cars for granted, and most times they won’t let us down, but we need to look after them in the extreme heat so they don’t pose a danger to you and your family.
“I would ask that you check your car is in tip-top condition before you head off to avoid breakdowns and make sure you and your passengers don’t fall ill on your day out. Carrying a bottle of water in your car could be a lifesaver.”

Follow our 5 top tips for a safe day out

  1. Be prepared before you set off. Make sure you have lots of water to drink and a first aid kit to hand should it be needed. Remember any medication you might need too. Always take more water and snacks than you think you might need to prevent you and your passengers falling ill.
  2. Never, ever leave a child or animal alone in a car when the temperatures are hot, not even for a few minutes.
  3. Avoid a summer breakdown and keep your car roadworthy. In extreme temperatures your car’s components should be working to keep you safe and prevent the engine overheating. Top up oil and water, check your battery and air-conditioning works and replace worn tyres for better road grip to ensure a safe journey.
  4. Keep your vehicle cool. Use air-conditioning or open windows to keep the interior cool. Park in a shady area to keep the internal temperature low upon your return. Cover the steering wheel and seats with a towel so they are not too hot to handle!
  5. Keep control of your car to avoid a collision in the bright sun. Wear sunglasses to help reduce glare and make sure your windscreen wipers work. Top up washer fluid so you keep a clear screen when you are driving. Don’t let dead insects block your view!
