Last month, Roads Policing Unit officers arrest eight motorists in three Vision Zero days as part of their work to keep roads in Essex safe.

Our Roads Policing Unit continues to work hard with our partners at Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP) to make the roads in Essex safe, to reduce crime on our roads and uphold the law.

Vision Zero days highlight to the public that road-related crime won’t be tolerated and show we will take all necessary action to tackle offenders and to remove any risk to other road users.

Last month (July) eight arrests were made when vehicles were stopped as part of Vision Zero policing activities.

In Waltham Abbey, one driver was arrested for drink or drug driving and a man was arrested on suspicion of theft in the Metropolitan Police area after he failed to stop for police then decamped from his vehicle.

Two arrests were made in Brentwood for drivers arrested on suspicion of drug driving and for being concerned in the supply of Class B drugs.

Southend Vision Zero saw four arrests – two for drug driving and one arrest for immigration offences.

A fourth arrest was made when a vehicle was stopped and it was discovered the driver was wanted for theft. The actual vehicle was in a very poor state, and despite having a current prohibition order being, it had been driven over 2,000 miles, and reported for dangerous driving.

Play your part in keeping our roads safe.

Vision Zero policing activity.

A typical Vision Zero day at Southend (1 July) saw Road Safety staff from Southend-on-Sea City Council and Essex Highways engage with forty-one drivers, riders and passengers about Vision Zero; all agreeing that road deaths in Essex should be reduced to zero.

The stops resulted in drivers and passengers in vehicles stopped for not wearing seatbelts (20), mobile phone use (13), one motorcycle pillion passenger was advised about suitable protective clothing.

One parent was spoken to about the need for a suitable child seat for their seven-year-old.

Sadly, a number of excuses for not wearing seatbelts included forgetfulness or being in a rush with one delivery driver believing he was exempt as his next delivery was less than 5 minutes away!
