Nine new volunteers took their oaths on Monday 9 January

Nine new members of our Special Constabulary have taken their oaths and will now take to the streets to protect and serve Essex.

The volunteer officers – who will now take up posts in Chelmsford, Colchester, Brentwood, Basildon and Thurrock – took part in a special ceremony at Essex Police Headquarters in Chelmsford on Monday night (9 January).

They took their Oath to the King in front of friends and family, as well as Assistant Chief Constable Glen Pavelin, Police, Fire, and Crime Commissioner for Essex Roger Hirst, and Justice of the Peace Jacky Froggatt.

Welcoming the new volunteer officers into the Essex Police family, Superintendent Shaun Kane, Head of the Special Constabulary, said:

“We currently remain the second largest Special Constabulary in the UK. It’s a real privilege and challenge to be part of policing, and you’re making an invaluable difference to serve and protect the people of Essex.
“I want to say a massive thank you to our nine new Special Constables who now join our teams policing across the county. There’s no underestimating the journey and commitment that you’re undertaking.
“We're one policing, crime fighting and community safety family at Essex Police, and we’re proud that you’re part of it.”

Eager to get started

The new Special Constables are eager to get started.

SC Georgina Banks, who moved here from Australia five years ago, is now ready to serve and protect Brentwood. She said:

“I wanted to do something different, and I like helping people.
“When I came over to England, I went to an open day where I learnt about working in the police. It inspired me to give it a go and now I’m here! You’ll never know if you don’t try.”

SC George Atkins, who works as a Logging Technician, will be starting his journey with Essex Police in Chelmsford. He said:

“I’ve always wanted a job where I can actively help people.
“It’s really rewarding being a Special Constable. You’ll gain life important skills and a lot of confidence. It can be difficult at times, but you’ll be so proud of yourself for taking the leap.”
