Meet Chief Inspector Leigh Norris, he has been a serving officer with Essex Police for nearly 27 years. In that time, he has been a response and community officer, a negotiator, a firearms officer and public order commander.

We spoke to him about his work and why he chose to build his career serving the communities of Essex.

Can you tell us about your current role and any other roles you’ve held?

I have been a Chief Inspector for nine years and have had a varied career so far, leading some amazing teams.

I had the honour of being the Thurrock District Commander leading the policing teams to help protect and support everyone who lived or worked in the area.

I was then responsible for the Force Control Room which manages all the incoming 999 and 101 calls for Essex. I have been part of the Emergency Services Collaboration Team and as the Chief of Staff to the Chief Constable who led the Essex COVID-19 response.

Currently I am the Chief Inspector on the Positive Action Team within the HR command. As a team we support anyone starting their careers with us and those looking at the next steps to progress their careers.

It’s fair to say I have had some varied roles and I am proof there is a lot of choice available for an interesting career to consider!

When and why did you join the police?

Like most people who work in policing I wanted a career where I would be able to help others. I strongly believe in helping my local community and I do a lot of voluntary work in my local area.

I lost my dad when I was 12 and he was 39, I think that made me really determined to want to do something positive with my life.

I think my lived experience as a child has helped me deal with bereavement in policing situations.

What is the most rewarding part of the job or the part you enjoy the most?

Being able to help people, whether staff and teams or the public that reach out for help.

Usually, most people contact the police for something that has gone wrong, being able to help, even if its temporary, is rewarding.

Can you offer any advice for new recruits?

Do your research, it will help you standout during the process and make it easier for you.

What does Essex Police do? What are the challenges and policing issues we deal with? And what can you do to play your part.

Be punctual, look smart (think of ‘one chance to make a first impression’) and be enthusiastic.

Present the best version of you.

A career that values difference. Join Essex Police.

Do you fit the bill?

At Essex Police, we value difference, and know that we’re strongest when we all work together.

If you share our values and want to protect and serve our communities, why not join us?

If you think you could protect and serve the people of Essex, either as a police officer, member of staff or volunteer, why not see if you fit the bill?
