Court and Convicted

14:16 28/03/2023

20230324 Rory Miles wide

A man has been jailed after work by our specialist detectives saw him convicted of rape.

Rory Miles, 32, was convicted last month of sexually assaulting a woman at an address in Dunmow.

He had assaulted her following a night out on 10 November 2018, before she was able to get away from him and call for help.

She was supported by specialist officers from our Adult Sexual Abuse

Investigation Team and an investigation into the attack was carried out.

It led to Miles, of Harris Green, Dunmow, being charged with rape.

He was found guilty of one of the five charges he faced. Three others will remain on file as no verdict was reached.

At Chelmsford Crown Court yesterday (Monday 27 March), he was sentenced to four years in prison and put on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.

"I would like to commend the woman involved in this case for her strength and dignity"

Investigating officer Detective Constable Jon Nottage said:

"Firstly I would like to commend the woman involved in this case for her strength and dignity throughout this process and I hope that this verdict will bring some comfort.

"I would like to also extend my thanks to various agencies, witnesses, along with the woman’s family and friends who supported her from the moment it was reported.

"Rory Miles was today convicted for the rape of this woman and sentenced to four years in prison.

"Miles is a cruel man, on the night he preyed on a woman who believed she would be safe in his company.

"He did not admit his guilt at any point and maintained everything that happened on the night was consensual and instigated by the woman.

"The Jury expertly navigated through the evidence and found him guilty of rape, and today, he now faces his foreseeable future behind bars.

"To anyone out there who has experienced sexual violence of any form, I know that coming forward is a huge and difficult decision with many worries and concerns.

"I would urge you to come forward and speak to us, we can take things at your own pace and put you in touch with many great agencies that are out there that can offer you additional support."

Support for sexual abuse survivors

Support is there for anyone affected by rape and sexual abuse, and no victim or survivor is alone. Synergy Essex provides specialist support for victims and survivors of rape and sexual abuse of all ages and all genders across Essex, Thurrock and Southend.

Synergy Essex is a partnership of rape and sexual abuse centres in Essex: CARA (Centre for Action on Rape and Abuse), SERICC Rape and Sexual Abuse Specialist Service and Southend-on-Sea Rape Crisis (SOS Rape Crisis). Synergy Essex is independent from the police and provides support for victims and survivors throughout their journey.

Victims and survivors can self-refer, or be referred by a parent, partner, friend or professional and can access specialist emotional support, counselling and advocacy. For victims and survivors who report to the police, Synergy Essex provides an Independent Sexual Violence Adviser (ISVA) service, providing support throughout the criminal justice process.

For more information visit the Synergy Essex website:

Essex Police is committed to supporting survivors of sexual abuse and bringing their offenders to justice.

We have a range of specialist teams who support survivors and investigate crimes.

We’re also working with partners to ensure victims are supported and improve investigations.

Since January 2020, we’ve sought advice from the CPS at a much earlier stage to help develop and progress an investigation and increase the chance of a case going to trial.

In 2019 we helped established the Synergy Essex First Responders scheme which was a first-of-its kind project which gives victims access to support within one working day of reporting an offence to police.

And we’re solving more cases.

We’re solving more rape and sexual offences cases than 12 months ago and we’re solving a greater percentage of cases than five years ago, despite the number of recorded offences having nearly doubled.
